Science: Making Jelly

Yesterday Room 8 made jelly out of jelly crystals and water.  We were trying to see if hot water or cold water mixed our ingredients faster.  We are learning all about mixtures and how when two or more things are mixed they can make a new substance.

If you would like to do this experiment, you will need: some jelly crystals, hot and cold water, some cups and something to mix with.

1. Put a few jelly crystals into a cup.
2. Pour hot water into the cup.
3. Watch and see how much of the mixture has dissolved.  Smell the mixture to know the difference.
4. Stir the mixture, observe the colour.
5. Repeat the process with cold water.

We found out that hot water made the mixture mix faster without being stirred.  We also found that the two mixtures smelled different!

Recount Writing: Folk Dancing

As well as procedural writing, Room 8 is also practicing recount writing. We are looking at using adjectives and similes to make our writing more interesting. Here is Ernie to tell you about Folk Dancing:

On Thursday morning Room 8 went to Folk Dancing in the Puriri Quad for fitness. First we lined up and walked up the steep hill. We made three circles that were as round as apples.

Next the music turned on very loud. We danced to the music. I felt very tired like I was going to fall over.

Finally we went back to class. I felt as happy as if I had won a running race. I had fun at Folk Dancing.

Picasso Art

video
To go with our clay faces which we have painted in Picasso style, we have practised drawing Picasso faces using pastels. First we drew the outlines of our faces and decided on the colours we would use. Next we talked about Picasso and reminded each other of what his portraits looked like. We talked about how he used strong lines and lots of colour. Finally, we used pastels to colour in our portrait and make it bright. Have a look at our great art!

Blog Commenting

video
At the moment, Room 8's big focus is leaving comments that are appropriate and interesting. Today, we got into pairs and all read a post on a blog together. Then we wrote comments in our pairs on small whiteboards. Next, we talked together about the comments we had written and gave each other feedback and feed forward. Finally, we posted some of our fantastic comments on other people's blogs. If we comment on your blog, we hope you enjoy our new skill in commenting!!
